Raw Highlights

June 26th, 2014

Being from the dirty south has its advantages.  Actually, to us southerners it has MANY advantages!  Because, you know…..the south is perfect!  From everything such as the tropical weather, the extra syllable lingo….to the kickin' awesome foods!  The south equals L O V E  to me!

As soon as we hit Knoxville, Tennessee……all the flavors and feelings of south started to kick in.  We found a fancy shmancy hotel downtown to park it for the night and right across the street was a seafood restaurant.  Oh, of course we wanted to eat "close by".

We're suckers for a good seafood restaurant and any place that offers fresh raw oysters is golden in our book!

This was our first experience with oysters on the trip!  And they were worth the small fortune we paid for 2 half dozen plates!

The next morning we took off for HotLanta where we stayed the night at the Westin Hotel right downtown in the heart of the city.  We made it there just in time to jump in a cab and head to Turner Field for a Braves game.

How HOT do we look?  Because, if my memory serves me correctly….we are pretty much on FIRE!  It was so hot, I was sticking to my plastic stadium seat.  Blech!

But look….who was there for the air-conditioning?  We were there for this –>

He needed to go!  So, we went and spent a ton of money while the Phillies beat down our Braves!  We left early and caught another cab back to our hotel hoping to make it in time to go to the pool.  Didn't happen.

The next morning we set off for Gainesville.  Stopping there would put us just close enough to our final beach destination and still allowed us places to bike shop.  Life revolved around that dang bike, I tell ya.  Our first stop was a Target store where hubby was on his phone booking our hotel stay for the night.  After shopping there and then over at Walmart we went into the hotel to check-in…..only "someone" couldn't find his bank card.  The same bank card he was just using at Target to make our reservations.

Somehow, he stepped out of the car and the card must have been in his lap.  Gone!  No more card for him.  The entire trip!  So, I guess you could say….I paid his way everywhere we went all week!

See how I give?  Nevermind that I don't make any financial contributions to our accounts.  I paid, y'all….I paid!

We left Gainesville bummed about the card and frustrated that we didn't find a sweet bike.  But….the Lord was going before us in the best of ways.  Because the first place we stopped before getting down to the beach was here — >

Card?  What card?

2014-06-19 14.44.40

Someone lost a bank card?  Ehh, who cares!

These oysters were HUGE!!!  This restaurant was so good.  It's called Anna Maria Oyster Bar!  We left so stuffed that we didn't think of oysters again for a few days!

2014-06-19 17.49.44

Mostly because we finally made it here!  This place has a way of wiping all your troubles away.  The weather was absolutely perfect the entire time we were in Florida.  Not a single raindrop….until we were on the interstate barreling for home.

It was a long week of raw fun!

Bike Dreams

June 25th, 2014

Forever.  That's how long I've been dreaming of a pink beach cruiser.  Many years ago, I found a nice cruiser at a Dick's Sporting Goods store only it wasn't pink.  It was a blue-green color.  I bought it….but it never filled that void.

This year, after the big move….I started thinking about that pink cruiser again.

Since I am a practical kind of gal, I pushed my desire back over to the side.  I reasoned with myself that —  I already HAD a bike, just be happy with it!  Even though it was older and not what I "really" wanted.  Then, one of my girl's mentioned needing a good cruising bike for zipping around town and I had a eureka moment.  I volunteered up my old bike…so I could pass it along for "good reasons" and finally find my pink baby!

Guess how easy it is to find a pink beach cruiser?  IT'S NOT EASY!!!  Just Google it!  Many will pop up, but getting them to Indiana…..without practically making a car payment is tricky.  My hubby and I planned to TAKE OUR NEW BIKES to Florida with us for this last vacation.  Both of us searched high and low for weeks trying to find my bike (he wasn't picky) and ended up driving away last week with an empty bike rack in the back of the jeep.  We had reached the point…..of paying whatever it cost to get that danged bike!

On the long trip to Florida we had one agenda in mind.  FIND THAT BIKE!  We stopped at a million stores.  We tried Walmart in every state between here and south Florida, we tried sporting good stores, we even stopped at Pawn shops…..bike stores too!  I can't tell you how many times I almost went ahead and purchased a bike I did not want (green, lime colored, yellow….several different colored bikes) there were no pink beach cruisers anywhere!  And just about every bike I found had hand brakes.  I did not want hand brakes either!

Is it really too much to ask…..for a pink grandma beach cruiser with pump brakes?

Once we reached the beach, my hubby went ahead and purchased a bike for himself.  Since he didn't really have a preference, he bought a bike off the rack at Walmart.  Then, he regretted it.  He made me call every bike store between that Walmart and the hotel at the beach searching for a pink cruiser or he was taking his back.  Every store either wanted up to $500 or had hot pink bikes, no one had what I was looking for.  One lady told me, "pink bikes were popular like 4 years ago!".  I asked her if she ever shopped for something she wanted really badly?  Did she settle?  She admitted she understood and I told her, "ok, I'm going to find my bike!".

Reluctantly, my hubby put his bike on our beach front porch and we went to dinner with friends.  The next morning I woke up feeling horrible (it is no fun being a girl) and we decided to take a tour of some of the bike stores down near the beach.  Just to see…

The very first store (from the outside) looked like a fancy pants racer bike kind of store so I didn't have my hopes up….until we walked in and the clerk offered to show us the ONE PINK BIKE he had for sale.  As soon as I laid eyes on it, I knew!

2014-06-20 10.48.11

He wheeled it to the back door and set me off to "test drive" it and as I whizzed around the parking lot…..I yelled to my hubby, "THIS IS MY BIKE!".  I pulled up to the doors and they pulled off the price-tag and boom!  IT WAS PAID FOR not only with blood, sweat and tears but with over 1067 miles of stopping and searching….and internet scouring!

2014-06-20 10.48.29

Notice behind me, all the serious biking bikes.  Yea, I'm not embarrassed!  I found what I was looking for, y'all!

2014-06-20 10.54.13

Finally, he could put that bike rack to use with more than just a dude bike.

2014-06-20 10.56.41

Look at him, being so careful!  He knows my heart and does whatever it takes to make my dreams come true.  Even for silly things like pink bikes!

2014-06-20 10.57.08

I've thought about that bike lady a hundred times (the one who said, "pink bikes were popular like 4 years ago") because everywhere I rode my bike people complimented me!  Like, went out of their way to say something sweet about my bike.  Everyone (EVEN GUYS) loved my pink bike!  My hubby got a great laugh out of other driver's on the road passing us on our way back up to Indianapolis.  He could see wives tapping hubby's shoulders and pointing at my bike.

He said, "You're the envy of the whole interstate!".

And to think…..pink bikes were so 4 years ago!!!

me and my sweet bike

Bike dreams…..do come true!

Last Sunset

June 24th, 2014

2014-06-22 20.14.24

There's no denying the beauty of a beach sunset.  It marks the end of a long day filled with blazing sun and crashing waves then suddenly turns calm and breezy right before your eyes.  Even the beach-goers slow down and wait….for that very moment when day turns to night and all the sand, sunscreen & wet swimsuits retire for the night knowing tomorrow, is going to be another summer-filled day!

2014-06-22 20.21.55

Our last night on the beach was the one night we didn't have to be anywhere or meet-up with anyone….it was just ours to do with what we wanted.  So, we spent it down at the water.  Nothing compares to the ocean at the end of the day.  The smells, the wind…..the crashes of waves and the reminder that God is all around us.  We stood in awe and clicked away with our cameras hoping to capture just a glimpse of His beauty.

2014-06-22 20.00.28

And we loved every last minute of our last sunset on the beach!

2014-06-22 20.13.47

God,

As I walk on the sand and hear nothing but the sound of the ocean…..I'm reminded of how amazing heaven must be.  Thank you for a tiny peek at paradise and thank you that I am promised a place there someday….with you.

Amen

Picking Up

June 20th, 2014

What's 30 years between friends?

reunion girls

After an evening of laughs and "remember when's…." last night, not much.  Everyone's pretty much been doing all they could to live life to the fullest.

The weekend is jammed with fun activities to connect old friends and I am so very glad I came.  Not just for the beach but the people.  The people are special to my heart and a great reminder of a lifetime ago.  One filled with silliness, crazy decisions and big dreams of a future that most of us couldn't imagine.

I am convinced…..friends can always pick right back up where they left off!

Take Off Day

June 16th, 2014

It's finally here!  Take off day for our FIRST vacation without our kids!  I find it pretty ironic that the reason we're actually going on this trip is to meet up with my classmates from Hardee Senior High school (CLASS OF 84!) to celebrate our 3 0 th Reunion!

So, you know….old people stuff!

Yea, time to connect with other old farts who have weathered life's storms and left behind young healthy skinny bodies to be the people we are today.  Chances are….we'll have lots in common besides jelly rolls & crows feet or even arthritis and the die-a-beet-us!

We'll be sharing all that life has given to us and taken away….and hugging necks of those we played with on the playground, wrote notes to in class and sat with at lunch.  I look forward to a great weekend of fun with people WHO KNOW ME and still love me even after a 30 year long separation.

Isn't that cool?

And doing it all while staying on the beach ain't so bad either, right?

senior yr
God,

Thank you for home.  Thank you for the life you've given me and for the place that started it all.  Growing up in a small town was a blessing that jumpstarted all that I am today.  Let my life bless others because of WHO YOU ARE inside of me.

Amen

Not Afraid

June 15th, 2014

I wish I could take all the credit but I can't.  God completely had a hand in picking out the man who would father my children.  I tried everything to make the wrong choice…..but just to show you how BIG GOD is (and I can do it, over & over) HE GAVE ME, DON GALLOWAY!

IMG_0395

25 years ago, I was young & naive enough to think that picking a husband was mostly for my own benefit.  It didn't take me long to realize…..he's not just FOR ME!  We had our first baby that very first year of marriage.  Not planned by us, clearly by God because….hello, real life!  I knew the week our son was born, this guy was going to be a dad to beat all dads.  I could see and feel the love he had for our son.  His fierce protective fatherly instincts ensured me, he was a dedicated father and nothing would ever tear him away from our kids.

It only grew stronger with the addition of our two girls.  Again, clearly a God thing!  We didn't think we could handle daughters.  Ha!

In a world like ours, a dad who sticks around…..genuinely cares for his children….lives to love and care for them and honors their mother with his whole life is a rare find.  I am blessed to say that I married a man just like that.  He is perfect for me, he is perfect for our kids and he is just the man GOD HAD FOR ALL OF US!

Happy Father's Day, Babe!  You are worth every brag, every smile and every joyful spirit!  You make each of us….so proud!  Thank you for not being afraid to lead your family.  You have set the example for our own children of what a real dad looks like.

I love you!

You're not afraid…

To be loving

To be silly

To be wrong

To be real

To be strong

To be put out

To be proud

To be mushy

To be over-worked

To be a leader

To be a Father
