Where To Stick Resentment

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Ever have one of those days….the kind that push you in a corner?  That make you feel frustrated and put out?  It's probably safe to say that we all do.  Life can be great and then turn cruddy with the speed of a Nascar driver.  The battle to keep resentful emotions at bay can be tough.  I know from experience.

So what can we do?

RECOGNIZE  — Life isn't really just out to get us.  It can seem like it is sometimes but it's not.  Stuff happens; husbands work too much, kids disrespect, bills get paid twice and you lose your prized possessions when you need them the most.  Recognize that those moments are just moments.  They do not represent all that life has to offer.  GOOD STUFF HAPPENS TOO!

REGROUP  —  It's so tempting to get even or lash out when you're feeling resentful.  Stop and take a moment to regroup mentally & emotionally.  Nothing is more harmful to relationships than over-reacting to a situation that just can't be helped.  GET IT TOGETHER!

REMIND  —  How easy it is to forget the BIG PICTURE!  Life is short.  Really short.  Don't waste time fretting over silly stuff that can't be changed.  Go with it.  Sometimes the stuff we feel resentful over is just what God is using to mold us & shape us….or better yet, it's something that He has a greater plan in mind and we're going to miss it if we don't get over ourselves!  BE HAPPY ANYWAY!

I was tempted to be a total baby on my blog today and whine about how frustrated I was with a "situation".  God said, "NOPE!".  Look for the blessings.  So, I did and you know what?  I feel so grateful for the way things are RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE!

Summer Detox Begins

Thursday, May 23rd, 2013

I’m starting summer off with a few of my favorite loves…

9+ months of early mornings take their toll on an old mama like me. So it’s likely to take several weeks for me to completely decompress.

I’m willing to suffer.

With the help of these two, of course.

This summer I plan to enjoy every minute of my life. I can’t forget how fleeting it can be — life can change in a flash.

Just take it from these chicks… They know.

Graduation Breakfast & More

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

It’s that day. The one I’ve been waiting for with mixed emotions. The day my baby celebrates her last school breakfast with her friends and teachers. Then lines up with the ones she’s grown up with and makes a practice walk through graduation.

Lined up with friends.

All dolled up too.

So many memories coming down to this day.

I can’t be more proud of my girl. Life is just beginning and her future is so very bright. I’m celebrating right alongside her. God is so good!

Happy last day (for real) Miss Gates!’

Hanging in There

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

I’m trying to keep my head above the water. It’s the day before the LAST day of school so the energy is alive amongst the savages. Therefore, the challenge is to keep them under some sort of control.

Tough job!

I woke up this morning to a dryer full of clothes covered in black gel ink pen. Good morning Mama! Not only do the clothes have ink spots but the dryer may never look the same again. Poor me oh my!

I won’t go down without a fight!

Oklahoma is so terribly heartbreaking and I can’t get the images out of my mind. Just now I watched a news video of an elderly lady standing beside her completely lost home…then during the interview & out from under the crushed rubble her sweet dog comes crawling out. They had to help him of course because he was totally buried!! All night!

God help them all! People & pets alike!

For this to be my Tuesday/Thursday it sure is a doozy! I decided after the ink pen disaster that I WOULDN’T give satan a moment of my joy today and I mean it!

I will sing of HIS goodness & glory!

Love What You Wear

Friday, May 17th, 2013

I could not be more flattered than when someone compliments me on an outfit.  Seriously, at my age?  I'm thrilled to hear friends & even strangers say they love what I'm wearing!  Yesterday, I wore a simple lacy dress that cost me a whopping $29 dollars(maybe) and I bet you that I had more than 25 compliments.  Everywhere I went…someone said, "I love your dress!".  By the end of the day, I was thinking to myself, "Wow, this is a great dress!".

The truth about the clothes I wear is simple — > ON SALE!

I have always been pretty fashion conscious.  I never want to look dorky (even though I HAVE) or out of style.  However, I'm not one to follow trends necessarily either.  I really just BUY WHAT I LOVE!  If I see something that is a must-have and looks flattering on me…I try my best to find it on sale or at a better price.  Usually, I do.  If not, it wasn't that important anyway.

My daughters do the same thing when shopping.  They first look over what's popular and cute then cut to the clearance rack for the real bargains.  I can't stress enough how important it is to shop in the right places.  TJ Maxx, Dillards, Francescas….Forever 21 (carefully, want to be age appropriate) and Banana Republic.  These are some of my favorite places to find real bargains and simple styles that fit my personality.  I confess, I love 2nd hand stores too.  There IS NOTHING wrong with buying refurbed clothes & stuff.  Matter of fact, it is the greatest way to get the things you LOVE but can't really afford paying the full price/retail!

In all honesty, I'm not doing anything special.  Everyone I know is looking for a bargain and most everyone I know wants to look good.

Here are a few of my shopping rules — just the basics, y'all!

1)  Only buy what I need & love.  Ever.

2)  Shop at frugal stores that offer great sales & clearance.

3)  Scour the clearance & sale racks thoroughly.

4)  Pick unique items.  Dresses are a great way to look good, easily.

5)  WEAR WHAT I LOVE!  Too many times, we save lovely things for "special" occasions.  Don't do that!  Wear it!

6)  Shop often.  Don't buy often, but look for what's out there and be price smart.

7)  Buy items that can go with stuff I already have.  Layering and mix-n-match is the way to go.

8)  Take back what doesn't work.  If I get home and it shows a flaw that I despise or feels itchy….I return it!

9)  Find what flatters the most.  Don't chase trends.  Wear what makes you look fabulous.  I don't look right in turtlenecks or certain collared shirts.  So, I avoid them!

10)  Stick to certain colors.  I can't get enough white, cream or taupe.  I love them and they love me back.  Every single time I wear those colors, I receive compliments.  Figure out what makes you shine!

I love clothes but I love good bargains even better.  I'm a firm believer that everyone can look good and afford it.  Some people pride themselves on wearing the most expensive or popular clothing, and throwing around fancy names.  I'm not into that so much.  If I can find good looking & affordable, so can you!  Get out there…and shop, friends!

Showing Honor

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

It's the end of the school year and with that comes a slew of recognitions.  Students, of course, for all their hard work and accomplishments.  Great teachers who have influenced and worked alongside them everyday and even those who are retiring from a lifetime of service.  All of them, very deserving and worth honoring.  I see the hardwork and I understand the comittment it takes to do such a job as education.  I thank God for the many teachers who invested in my own children throughout school.

Teachers are amazing!

I read a Facebook status today from a co-worker that pointed out how important it is to recognize the many who make school great behind the scenes.  She wasn't complaining or pointing fingers.  Her words were kind and her tone loving.  But her message powerful!  There are many little people who do jobs around schools that never get noticed.  I know this….very well.

I'm not jumping on a soapbox and I'm not taking her post to the extreme.  I simply agree.  I see the dedication it takes to make the education environment run smoothly.  I know aides who go the extra mile (even though they make peanuts compared to the teachers), I recognize how important janitors are (gosh, how I love it when they make the A/C work or clean up an accident), I enjoy seeing the smiles of a happy secretary (who is helpful too) and I get a kick out of the little ways the lunchroom ladies hide my favorite cookie for me or others (just because they KNOW what we like).  These people are important!  They are the glue that holds the place together and they never get a big shout out.

So, in honor of school coming to a close….

GOD BLESS THOSE WHO SERVE IN EDUCATION!  The crossing guards, janitors, caretaker aides, nurses, office staff, classroom aides, special ed assistants, lunchroom ladies, maintenance guys & gals, and the SUBSTITUTES!

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE and everyone notices what you do EVERYDAY to make school great!

I hope your summer is as amazing as you!
