Rafflecopter Blues

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

I’ve been blogging for a while now and new things just keep evolving in the blog world. Some of them are amazeballs, other’s stink like a skunk! I’ve found online friends that I wouldn’t have met otherwise and I’ve won some crazy awesome contests. Since 2008, I’ve racked up some sweet prizes; books, jewelry, electronics/printer, software, clothing, giftcards and more. I love playing along!

Lately, the big thing out there in bloggy contests is the Rafflecopter. I’m not sure how the blogger comes into joining one (since I don’t play the rafflecopter game) but I will say that I’m a huge hater of the process. Why? I’ll give you my lame legit reasons.

1–They tend to have MULTIPLE bloggers participating! What does that matter? Well, if you have to go down a list of 10 or more blogs and click to LIKE them on Facebook, click to JOIN on Google Friend Connect and Tweet about them…you’ve invested a good amount of your day just TRYING to enter to win a single prize (that usually is worth approx. $130). Seriously, I’d rather buy my own Kindle or ipod! It’s just NOT WORTH the hassle.

2–The links always ALWAYS have some snafu’s! What does that mean? Every single time I’ve tried to play along on a rafflecopter, somewhere down the LONG LINE of blog clicks…I have managed to find the one that isn’t working quite right. Since this is so very time consuming, you either have to walk away and risk forgetting about where you left off or you hang with it and keep pushing on hoping to successfuly get through. Again, so not worth it. Especially when the rules are so strict about FOLLOWING THE RULES EXACTLY and completing every single step. Which are many, people!

3–Who knows if you’re REALLY entered? The way the rafflecopter system is set, you go down a long line of blog entries and follow whatever clicks they offer and when you’ve jumped through all the blog contest hoops..you click I DID THIS! That’s it! Nothing says, “You’re entered” or “you are # so-n-so”. It gives no evidence that you’re an actual player in the contest (for the whopping prize of a new set of books for your toddler or whatever). The only thing you may see is some outrageous number of +86,998 entries so far. Uhh, really discouraging! If you ask me, which I know you didn’t but this is my take on the rafflecopter…so I’m saying it like I see it. Who wants to play THE LOTTO? This is a BLOG CONTEST PEOPLE!!!

4–The constant flow of “stuff” from the new FACEBOOK friends is overwhelming! Now, they like to throw in that if you HIDE them from you page that you are DISQUALIFIED from their GIANT prize giveaway! So, you are either held hostage (while you wait to hear if you were THE ONE out of 150,000 players to win the knife set) while their constant flow of crazy-ness comes filling up your Facebook page or you hide/block them and have wasted enormous time with the whole process. I’m so totally not a fan of this. I’m really not interested in tons of nonsense that some of these sites share. Seriously, I’m not a fan!!

5–What good is this for the blogger folks offering the prize? I’m talking about 1 ipod or 1 Nook Color for all 20 + bloggers. That’s it. One prize is given for all of those blogs! Not each blog. One! Seriously, they could have thrown in $10-15 dollars for the ONE prize and all this work does what? If this is for advertising of their blog…it doesn’t work! I’m so busy trying to follow every rule and jump through every hoop that I never get to actually look over their blog. Honestly, after all that….I want to leave nasty-grams on their comments (but I don’t!!). Not read or browse…let alone make a new bloggy friend! It’s a total turn-me-away-er! Buhbye!

Ok, no more ranting. I’ve just been holding this in for weeks now and thought why not share my take. I posted on Facebook how I loathe the Rafflecopter and immediately had a fellow blogger/Facebook friend question me as to WHY. She felt they were great and wanted to know why I felt the way I did. So, I shared these same reasons with her. I don’t know if it helped her see or empowered her to carry on with her rafflecopter dreams. Either way, I’m not interested. Since I’ve confessed to be a hater!  Kidding!

The way I see it is this…if you’re doing a giveaway to REACH people and to get them to read your blog make it easy and fun.  That’s what draws more readers and keeps them  coming back.  I’m just not interested in the commercialized or businessy style that Rafflecopter provides.  Like everything in this free country we live in….if you don’t like something, you don’t have to do it.  If I see a Rafflecopter–I just click the other way.

PS.  If you like that sort of thing, please ignore my opinion.  I’ve learned that everyone is different and what one person likes another might not like.  You choose.  Rafflecopter is right up there with Twitter for me.   Blek, to both!  😉

Veggie Soup

Monday, November 7th, 2011

What does it take to make the best Veggie Soup this side of the Indiana line? I’ll tell ya. Pretty much whatever you have in the fridge. It’s that easy. Since I had some “extra” time Sunday morning and a sick-in-bed hubby, I decided to fill my house up with the aroma’s that make my family love home.

Veggie Soup

1 lb. ground turkey (cooked & drained)
6-8 peeled cut-up potatoes
1 C. chopped carrots
1-2 cans diced tomatoes (I blend mine up)
1 bag frozen green beans
1 bag frozen corn
Heinz Catsup

I peel & cut my potatoes while the turkey is browning. If you want, add some minced onion to the meat. Sometimes I do or don’t. Drain meat and set aside. After my fresh veggies are cut up and washed, I bring them to a boil in a large stock pot 1/2 full of water. Turn them down & let them cook about 10 min on medium high (just enough to take the hardness away–you don’t want mushy veg’s). Then add in meat, tomatoes, beans & corn. Stir . Salt & pepper as needed. Put a lid on it and turn it down to medium low. Walk away. 😉

I let it simmer for a bit, stirring just to make sure nothing is sticking. It’s usually ready to eat within an hour. The last 10-15 minutes of cooking…I squeeze ketchup in to thicken it up the way my family likes it. You can do this to your liking. I never measure this, just add until it seems right. We’re from the south–we eat most everything with ketchup.

PS-Do not be fooled by the addition of ketchup. You won’t taste it. I simply use it to thicken the soup broth. It’s fantastic! I promise!

The only thing that will make this any better? Bake up a loaf of fresh bread & a pumpkin pie. Mmm, so good! Your family will definitely call you MOM OF THE DAY!!

What are you waiting for? Get cookin, ya’ll!

Fall Back

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

There may not be a person on this earth more happy to “fall back” than this girl! I’m always looking for ways to get a little bit more rest. Sleeping in an extra hour on Sunday just makes me want to skip and sing! Honestly, I won’t be sleeping any later…but the extra hour will make me feel as if I’m getting away with something. And who doesn’t like to do that?

I’ll waste it doing something important, I promise. It’s a blessing to have a little more time to do whatever. Which reminds me, I have one week left until I get to hold my new Kindle Fire in my hands. I’ve been all over Amazon’s site shopping and trying to familiarize myself with their book system.

It’s confusing. I can’t find the great deals that I know are out there. I’m also sad that my other books (from my Nook) can’t be transferred over. 🙁 The freebies at the Library are minimal too. But, I’m not complaining! I don’t even have it yet so what do I have to whine about? I’m just feeling a bit intimidated learning a new device.

Sad life, huh?

Phil 4:11-12
“I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.”

Wise words from the Apostle Paul. Good encouragement for when I lose perspective.

It’s another beautiful weekend here in Indiana. The leaves are scattered and the air is crispy with blue skies and sun shining bright. I’m planning a bit of shopping with my birthday girl later and maybe even hubby (he’s been sick for the last few days). I love having free time with the ones I love….

Don’t you? Enjoy your extra hour, friends.

I Can – I’m Mom

Friday, November 4th, 2011

November snuck up on me. One minute it was October and I was meanering through it like I had all sorts of time on my hands and then boom! November shows up! I love the fall and everything it brings with it; Birthdays, holidays, breaks and nice weather! Even the leaves all over the place.

Hello, new blower?!! 😉

I’m going through the list of must do’s today. It’s not much when you write it down but all of it special and important to me. My baby turns 17 on the 9th and like always, I’m reminded how fast they grow up. She’s my baby. I had convinced my mind that SHE WOULD ALWAYS be the baby. Meaning–she would just stay little and follow me around forever. Mind control, ya’ll! Fail!

Nowadays, I follow her around. She’s the one living out her upperclassman years (the last of my brood) and I’m simply just a bystander. I have the privilege of watching her and enjoying all her “lasts” at school. It’s not the same as with the other two. I guess they’re all different, huh?

In the time that I have left….I pray that God would use me to influence her to become all that HE wants her to be. It isn’t easy parenting children. Once they become young adults, much of your training has been put into place. If you’ve goofed them completely up….I’m not so sure you can reverse a lot of it. Except FOR GOD! He can clean up any mess. If we simply just ask.

I love reading blogs of other parents and one of my favorites is I Take Joy by Sally Clarkson. She lives way out in Colorado but her words of wisdom are welcome all over this USA! She has parented for 28 years and gives some encouraging wisdom to all who read her words. Last night I read a sweet post written by her adult son, Nathan. It reminded me that everyday I have the power to speak truth and power into my kids.

Why would I want to squander my time with them? It’s now, November 4th and God has given me another chance to love & admonish my kids (even at their college & HS age). What words do you need to speak over your kids? Do they know their worth to you and to God? Open up your heart today and ask God to use you in the life of your kids! They will thank you for it someday.

Potato Praying

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

One of my least favorite household jobs is peeling the potato. Because in my family there a lot of people to feed which means many potatoes! I’m no good at making instant either. I can seriously mess up a box of spuds! Just ask my family. It’s a talent that God must not want me to possess.

So, I peel.

I’ve come up with a way to make it productive and enjoyable….believe it or not. I’m calling it POTATO PRAYING! Every time I pick up a potato to peel, I pray. I pick someone to pray for while I peel away all the yuck. When I move onto another tater, I pray for someone else on my list. It not only put my hands to work but my heart too.

I ended up praying for quite a few loved ones and piled up a large amount of potatoes for dinner. Winning!

How about you? What fun or creative way do you sneak in prayer? I know I’m not the inventor of snappy ways to pray or anything….I simply thought this was a great way to accomplish two important tasks in my life. Tell me how you fancy things up.

Happy Thursday, friends. It’s garbage day at my house….and I’M NOT THE ONE WHO HAS TO TAKE THE CANS TO THE ROAD!! Yay, to having a son home! 😉

Who Knew

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Have you ever had someone share a memory with you from a long time ago that you didn’t remember the same way? Gee, that was a long question. Hopefully it makes sense to someone?! I ramble.

I was on the phone with my mom the other night and she mentioned running into my highschool best friend (Joy & Lamar) and her husband. I haven’t been home in so long that it’s probably been 20 years since I’ve last visited with them. I laughed outloud when my mom told me (Lamar) wants me to make him some Lasagna. Really? Me? Make someone MY lasagna?

I’m seriously an amateur when it comes to cooking lasagna! But for some reason, Lamar’s last memory of me was a delicious dinner of lasagna. Poor guy! 🙂 I think we invited them over for dinner when we still lived in Florida and had little babies. A loooong time ago. If I know me….I went all out on that dinner.

Obviously, it worked.

Which brings me to making impressions.

Do you do what you do with intention? What I mean is…are you making the best of your moments? When you’re with people are you leaving them with a good memory? Sometimes, we’re clueless to it. But the longer I live, the more I think back on fun times I’ve had with people and smile.

Memories are forever. Are you making good ones? If not, why? Life is short.

“I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly” John 10:10
