Fall is for fun

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

We’re really enjoying our break. The weather has been nice (til today..it’s hot again) and now it looks like rain is finally heading our way. It’s so dry here that our entire state is under the burn ban. πŸ™

Anyway, none of this is stopping our adventurous spirits. We’re all about the party! Yesterday was our Louisville trip and it was great! The kids loved the Mega Caverns and so did we. It was so cool! Then hanging out at the mall was awesome too. Today is catch-up day and I’m not talking about the kind you put on a hotdog! πŸ™‚

We’ve grocery shopped. Raked leaves. Baked cookies. Carved pumpkins. Oh well, you get the picture. Here’s some photo’s of our weekend so far.

Fall Break

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Today kicks off our fall break and honestly, it couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m dog tired! So far this morning….I’ve eaten an egg sandwich, watched some tv, browsed my favorite blogs, thrown in a load of laundry to wash and put on my favorite sweats!

Don’t judge me. I know, I’m lame!

I tend to break things like time into chunks. I push to make it to this and that. Especially when it comes to surviving the school year. Life is like a roller-coaster. It flies by and shakes you up often making you dizzyingly sick. I just need to get off the ride and watch sometimes.

How about you? Do you like living in the fast lane all the time or do you need to step off and rest here and there? Whichever it is….I pray you’re in the best condition to handle it. You’ll never see me condemning anyone who has to stop and smell the roses! πŸ˜‰

I have some CAN’T WAITS going on right now:

Tonight. My hubby comes home from a conference in Buffalo, NY!
{I’ve missed you honey}

Tomorrow. Hubby is taking us (our kids and their peeps) to Louisville’s Mega Caverns.
{yay, to that!}

Also tomorrow. We’re going to the mall in Louisville and out to eat.
{double yay, good times}

This weekend. Spending it with my family relaxing.
{I’m all about the chillin}

Oh and one more tomorrow.

HUBBY TURNS 44! Happy Birthday to you! <3

Sister–friend

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

This post is part of a devotional carnival hosted by Rachel Olsen. Thank you, Rachel. I’m so psyched about the topic.
Friendship! Be sure to hop over and check out the other posts.

When I was in the 4th grade, I won the “Chatty Cathy” award in my class. I was devastated! I set my hopes on something nobel and fancy like “Happy Hannah” or “Smart Sally”…..so just imagine my disappointment? When I brought home the award my mom giggled out loud. She knew, I had earned it. I was chatty!

I have another memory along the same line as that. On my progress reports my teacher’s would leave little messages to my parents…..”Wanda likes to visit with her neighbors” or “Spends too much time talking”. I wish I could say I was railroaded…but I can’t! I deserved it. I’ve always been a talker. I love being friends and making friends.

Over my lifetime, I’d like to believe that God picked me special to have the friends I’ve had. He’s certainly lavished some of the world’s BEST on me. Some people say they have A best friend, but I say I have tons of besties. And I do.

Along this path I’ve found love from women in all walks of life. In seminary, it was a group of ministry wives. We bonded over coffee late at night. We met every week to laugh, talk and pray for our husbands and kids. During those nights we found a deep connection beyond our original intent. We found REAL friendships. Marilyn and Terry are still on the top of my friend list (even though we’re separated by many states). We pick right back up anytime we talk or see each other. I can trust them and rely on them…..and they can me. Even with the ugly stuff that we never want anyone to know. That’s a real friend.

Moving away from everyone you love can be pretty daunting. Especially when you move so far that you have no choice but to start over with friendships. I lived a whole year in Indiana before I met my BFF Tabbi. I was introduced to her by another bestie, Sara Jo. God has such a cool plan when it comes to relationships. Both of these women came into my life at just the right time for just the right reasons. Each of them have played a great part in molding me into the woman I am today. They sharpen me as a wife, mother and person. I can’t think of anything negative to say about either of them. They’re the real thing! It’s friends like these that remind me….I don’t have to go through anything alone.

Both ministered to me when I needed it most.

The place I live now would be unbearable if it weren’t for my sweet friend Betsy. God sent her to my high school just for me (don’t tell her…she might get totally bummed). She is a young, smart and all around fun person. She keeps me balanced. I tend to be wound up pretty tight and seriously on the “right” about everything. Betsy is levelheaded and able to rationalize things that I get all in a tizzy over. She’s a friend that you can share stuff with and know it’s not going to be used against you in anyway. She’s not perfect….and neither am I which makes us perfect friends. She’s not afraid to speak the truth to me. {That is a true friend}.

I heard Dr. James Dobson say many years ago on FOTF that women need women. He went on to say that men are NOT equipped to meet the emotional side of women. That’s why female friendships are so vital. Husbands are not built to meet all of our emotional happiness. It’s not a bad thing….it’s simply a fact. He opened my eyes with his “permission” to nurture womanly friendships. Once I started to purposefully be friends with other ladies…..everything else started to smooth out in my life. I enjoyed my husband & family even more thanks to my emotional love tank being filled. I learned to do stuff with other women and have fun while doing it. Before I felt guilty if I did anything outside of my own family. I’m so grateful for the sweet women God has placed in my friend circles.

I’m a better me….because of them.

“The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense”. Proverbs 27:9

Anybody Can Be A Bully

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Even big people. Grown-up adults. Our country is bombarded with the results of bullying every single day. It’s a crying shame! In the news lately? The many suicides by teenagers over homosexuality and bullying. Each one linked back to some form of peer bullying. But, I can’t help but think of the many other types of bullying that go on day in and day out! Just about every person you meet can share a bully story of some sort. It’s not just connected to sexual orientation. It never has been. People will pick on you for anything.

Wearing a hat, not wearing a hat. Driving a clunker, or a new car. Having out of date clothes, having new clothes. Being dumb, being smart. Not being popular, being popular. Having parents, not having parents. Sitting with certain people. Being gay, or straight. Being rich, poor.

ANYTHING!

There is no prejudice for bullying. Other than someone is prejudice against you for whatever they deem worthy of teasing you about. Nice huh? Yea, that’s how the world is and always has been. It’s just becoming more of a hot-spot these days now that the media is broadcasting the recent suicides.

Bullying stinks!

Now that I’m an adult…..I see bullying can come from even adults. We tend to think of it as a kid-only behavior. Not so. It seems that anyone with a little bit of power can be mean and tease. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot you can do about it. People are just like that.

What is it that makes us unkind? Why is bullying so prevalant? I wish I knew the answer. I think mean adults make mean kids and the cycle continues. But….why? Who in the world thinks meanness is good? {Darn you SIN!!} πŸ™

I wonder. What do you tell your kids when they face an adult that giggles or laughs at something meant as an insult to them? I’m trying to teach my kids the difference between something meant as hurtful and something meant in fun. But honestly…..this world is making it really hard to decipher the difference!

Dear God
Help me to show your lovingkindness to everyone. Even those NOT like me. Especially to them. Give me your eyes to see people the way you do. I can’t love in my own power….but I can in YOURS. Forgive me when I fail to love like you do.
Amen

Foot Of The Cross

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

Today, we drove over to Bloomington to visit our sweetboy and attend church with him. It was great! He’s involved in a college church plant called Foot Of The Cross. {Thank you Indiana Southern Baptists for such a ministry} He plays in the worship band and helps set up early on Sunday mornings. Pretty cool, huh? I mean, hello? He’s a 20 year old college dude……sleeping in on a Sunday morning sounds more like what he would rather do. But, not him. He really likes his church and the people who lead it. So, 6:30am is his wake-up & get rolling call.

I’m so glad we went. The worship was genuine and the preaching solid. It felt comfortable and challenging at the same time. I loved the way Pastor Mat taught about the power of the Holy Spirit and spoke bravely about living to testify. Great words for an old Christian like me and for the new.

It was a great day! Thank you FOTC folks for making us feel so welcomed and for loving on our boy. As a parent who’s had to let that first chick out of the nest…..it feels amazing to know there are wonderful followers of Jesus reaching out and ministering to him.

Dear Lord
I lift up this church and its ministry to you. May they continue to grow and bless those you’ve placed in their path. I can see your hand all over what they’re doing. Thank you for the many who love you and share you every week at FOTC. I’m extra thankful for what they’re doing to minister to my son. What a blessing!
Amen
