New Shoes

April 3rd, 2012

I married a giver.  I'm the mother of givers. It's true, that old saying…."It's better to give than to recieve".  Nothing prepared my heart for the day my middle school son would secretly give all he had to a classmate.

It was almost Christmas time.  The time where my kids would excitedly make out their wishlists.  As a family, we tried to keep things under control.  I never paid more than $45 for tennis shoes.  They didn't have the latest video games or gadgets.  It was just never in our budget.  But they did have shoes and clothes (bought by a bargain hunting mama).

Gavin had his eye on a pair of Nike tennis shoes.  At the time, designing your own Nike was the popular thing to do.  The cost?  $95!  He talked it over with me just to get a feel for what I thought about him putting it on his list.  I knew he really wanted them and promised to talk it over with his dad.

Fast forward a week or so.

I was watching him shoot hoops at church when he mentioned those fancy Nike shoes again.  He said that he changed his mind.  Which is normal for a middle school kid, so I listened to his new "idea".  He told me that he had a friend at school who has a lot of brothers.  He must have been the youngest because he NEVER got any shoes.  All he ever wore were old hand-me-downs that didn't quite fit him.

This bothered my boy.

The shoes he had been dreaming of didn't seem quite so special when he compared them to his friends shoes.  He knew that instead of buying an expensive pair of Nike's for himself, that God wanted him to buy his friend a pair of new tennis shoes.

And that's just what he did.  That was in the 8th grade, he's 21 now.  His heart is still as compassionate and his willingness to give just as big.  He spent all Saturday a few weeks ago, riding all over town searching for just the right giftcards for his sister's birthday.  One of them gas (she likes to put $7 worth of gas in her car at a time—cheapo) and another to her favorite clothing store.  He didn't spare the cost.  His intention…..was to bless her and he did.

I don't tell this story to make you think I have this wonderful kid–even though I do.  I share it because of the gift it is to give.  My own kids understand it and have demonstrated it to me many times.  In a world where everyone wants the best for themselves….I can't help but imagine that it pleases God when we give first with wild abandon.

To give you one last mind picture of what I'm saying….

When my son was a senior in high school, the same boy he gave the new tennis shoes to was in his band class.  I noticed he was still wearing the shoes my son had given him 4+ years earlier.  By that time, my own boy had gone through countless pairs of shoes.

Do you know someone you could secretly bless?  Do it, it will fill your heart more than any special something you could do for yourself.  I promise!

The Hunger Games

April 2nd, 2012

I've read the controversial reviews and blog fodder.  I've also read part of the first book.  It wasn't that I didn't like it, I just didn't have "fluff" reading time.  So, I put it down and waited like a vulture for the movie to hit the big screen.  I was able to see it this week during my spring break!

The movie?  Was, wow!

I really liked it.  I love the actress who plays Katniss and the other casting was amazing!  Each one fit just perfectly in the role they played.  The story…incredible! I know many are fussing about the idea of teenagers killing other teens.  But it you really understand the story, it's not because they want to do that.  They have no choice.  The government forces this yearly ritual upon them and the horror of it all is just a game to them.  One repeated concern is the violence of the story.  Which I can't speak to since I only read the first half of The Hunger Games.  But the movie was done very tastefully and it was no more violent than the tv show CSI.

The Hunger Games is clearly not geared for young kids.  So, if you're wondering if you should take your 8 year old…don't.  Unless of course you have read them together and have an ongoing dialogue about the story.  Which, in that case gives you an upperhand on what is exactly the premise of the trilogy.

Oppression.  Power.  Greed.  Hunger for survival.  All this and more.  If you haven't read the books, please don't discount them as something you wouldn't enjoy.  While I'm not a big fantasy fiction type myself…I did like reading the story and I loved the movie.  I can't wait to see the next one.   Really, I can't!

It's back to school for Gates and Me!  We now begin our END OF SCHOOL countdown.  The end is literally weeks away and no one, is happier than the two of us lazy bums!

35 DAYS TO GO!

Halleluia

March 30th, 2012

I’m always going to be the first to admit my weaknesses and my need for a savior. I’m small, insignificant and a tiny piece of this world’s magnificence. But, not to God. To Him, I am amazing and so are you. When I stop and ponder that… it takes my breath away.

Much like this song does.

My actions, words & oftentimes behaviors are fleshly. I make huge mistakes but God accepts and forgives my failings and raises my faith even higher because of it. I’m surely a poster-child for Jesus’ love and acceptance.

Without Him…..I’m not much at all.

Halleluia, I don’t have to worry. He’s right here with me. I could get all bummed out that it’s the end of my spring break. Instead, I’m going to celebrate that I actually had a break and go back with a great attitude. I want to finish out the year on top of my game. Why not praise Him for every little blessing?

May your Friday be one that you can sing Halleluia too.

Glutton For Punishment

March 28th, 2012

After a late night run to Indy to rescue a college aged son from a "towing"….I decided my punishment just wasn't rough enough,  I'm shopping today with my 2 teen daughter's and one of their friends.

I've only had a little bit of sleep….so somewhere along the way feathers may get ruffled.  Pray for me…

Here's a little funny for today.  If you've never heard of Jeanne Robertson, you must watch.  She has lived a riot of a life and has a way with words.  You can't help but crack up.  She reminds me… Life is fun, enjoy it!  Even the hairy rough parts!

TuesDoDay

March 27th, 2012

I bet you're wondering how much painting I've gotten done, aren't you?  Oh the painting.  It somehow got pushed aside thanks to some mystery plumbing problems.  We love the drama around here, y'all!  It's just how we function best.  School is out, have I mentioned that?  Even plumbing issues can't steal my joy!

It seems that our garage has been filling up with water everytime I do a load of laundry.  Probably a blockage somewhere in the line.  On Sunday, hubby pulled out the shovel and started digging.  I won't bore you to death with the mundane details of my plugged pipes…but I'll let you know that late last night, in the cold dark Indiana blackness he and our strappin' son finally hit something (ROOTS–dang these trees!!) and the floodgates opened.  Gavin was down in the manhole when all heck broke loose and according to hubby it was fast & furious.

All is well.  I've washed laundry and everything seems to be ok.  Let's hope this is all we have to do at this point.  The last root problem cost us a house remodel to our entire downstairs.  Not wanting to remodel….JUST REPAINT!!

While taking on the plumbing mess….the garage was driving my true love crazy and he decided to start reorganizing and putting stuff away!  Yes, he's a keeper!  But he's also ADHD and he got in over his head and had to quit (it was really late).  So the crazy boxes and junk are stretched out all over the garage.  Which really bugs everyone (why, I don't know…it's our garage.  We can shut the door and ignore it).  That job is the next TO DO on the list.  After he works all day.  🙁

I'm not fretting.  School is out and I'm running wild with no schedule.  Painting can wait…  Besides, I'm doing important stuff like watching videos and playing online.

Like THIS!!

Paint Me New

March 23rd, 2012

I've made big spring break plans.  It's been a long time coming.  I'm going to paint my dingy walls & ceiling.  The problem with that is once you start, you can't just quit.  As I walked around surveying the areas that needed a spruce up, I realized that the job was growing with every room.  How can everything need to be painted again, already?  It's only been a few years…

Which makes me think about my heart.  I know there are dirty spots and dings in the wall of my fluffy little secret place and that God wants me to take care of them just as much as my physical home.  But how often do I push that to the side in order to just get through a day.  Or cover up something that's ugly so I don't have to look at it or think about it?

The answer is, often.

I'm human.  I sin.  I think mean thoughts and sometimes….I spew them outloud.  I feel normal emotions.  I get jealous, feel envy and I even blow off the handle!  But those aren't my only weaknesses.  I have sinned and do sin (like everybody else) on a daily basis.  I KNOW THAT I NEED JESUS, every single day.

My heart is His but my flesh tries to rule it most days.  I'm sure many of you can relate.  Everyday is a battle and it's up to us to fight the good fight with the armor of God.  So my question to me today is this—>  Am I equipping myself adequately with God's word to face all that life is going to throw at me?

P-Prayer.  Am I prayed up?  Have I spent time talking to and listening to God?

A-Ask for forgiveness.  Have I confessed the sin hidden in my heart?

I-Imagine.  Am I imagining my eternity with Christ?  Or do I forget all about it?

N-Need.  Do I acknowledge my need for a Savior?  Am I relying on him?

T-Tell.  Am I telling other's about my Lord and His love for them and me?

As you can see, it's time to get busy.  My heart, like my house needs a spruce up.  What about yours?
