College Road Trip

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

If you’ve ever watched the Raven Symone movie College Road Trip, then you know how emotional searching for your daughter’s future college can be. I cry, every single time I watch it. Martin Lawrence plays the dad and he tries everything to force his little girl to attend the college HE CHOOSES! Sounds like a dad, huh?

That’s not how our trip played out. We have the choice narrowed down to two and they are in the same town, Bloomington! We took off towards B-town on Friday morning in search of answers. Both of us felt a little nervous about the whole situation (I hope that’s how everyone feels). Not only were we going to do a college tour….but Ally had a dinner date with her prospective roommates at 5pm. I can’t believe I just typed the words, roommates!?! Huh?

After our tour, we picked up Gavin from his apartment and headed for lunch. Mexican food! Yum! Then we did what everybody does on college visits….test drove Jeeps! We needed to kill time and this just happened to be what everyone wanted to do. In the rain! πŸ™

We ditched the dude and headed to the roommate dateNoodles. God has such a cool way of blessing us if we just get out of the way. That’s how Ally and I felt after leaving the roommate date. All of the girls were awesome! {Thank you Lord} Now, we just wait as in wait for final details about schools.

We had a great day and met some terrific people. We even learned our way around B-town (right Ally?).

Here’s our picture before we left…..We took it ourselves, can you tell?

1/2 C. Unsweetened Cocoa
1 t. Baking Soda
1/4 t. Baking Powder

Cream butter, egg & sugar together. Slowly beat in dry ingredients. Dough will be very thick. Using a teaspoon to scoop a small amount, then roll into a ball and flatten onto your baking pan.
Bake at 375 for 8 minutes. Let stand in pan a few minutes then move to cooling rack.

Cream Filling:
1/4 C. unsalted butter
1/4 C. vegatable shortening

Mix well and spoon small amount onto cookies. EAT!! (I mean, put them on a plate and share them. Duh!)

The hardest part? Making all your cookies match in size. Be careful, they are also very addicting! ENJOY!

Get up and go!

My SSMT verse that I’m memorizing is —2 Samuel 15:22, David told one of his mighty men: β€œGo ahead, march on.” I’ve been so excited about it (and I know it seems rather simple to most) but it speaks volumes to me. I’ve been twisted up in sorts about my life and my family’s future for a while now.

I really want to do His will….not mine! This week has been one little thing after another reminding me–I HAVE A FUTURE!! I’m on the right course and my desires aren’t in vain. God is so cool! From my Bible verse to a song….from a post about reaching more people for Christ to an invitation to preach a funeral (my hubby, not me)….and a few other awesome things. I see God at work in my life and I feel blessed and encouraged.

Simple words with big meaning. I like what Beth Moore said about the verse in 2 Samuel….If God says go, then get up and GO! I’m ready Lord!

Are you kidding?

I’m titling this post with a twinge of sarcasm because that’s just how I’m feeling about several things today. I mean, seriously? What is the world coming to? People are acting crazy! Then welcoming the world into their madness. I don’t know about you….but I could go a lifetime without seeing or knowing much of what society is spitting out at you and me (AND OUR KIDS, for that matter)!

Here’s a few to chew on:

CHARLIE SHEEN—Whaaaaa? If you need anymore explaination than me just saying his name…ask around! Dude has lost his mind! Oh and telling anyone who interviews him that HE’S A ROCKSTAR just pushes my mama buttons too far! {Jesus, take Charlie’s wheel!}

GASOLINE—I’m beyond words for this too! Who can afford to drive ANYTHING now? Let alone an SUV that holds all your punk kids. I’m so frustrated with these high prices….I’m considering purchasing my own rickshaw, only I’ll need it to hold 5 passengers! {look out hotlegs for summer}

INDIANA REPRESENTATIVES/LEGISLATORS—Let me rephrase that (DEMOCRATS that were ELECTED to DO THEIR JOBS!!). These people have left the state of Indiana because they disagree with the Republicans on several important matters. By fleeing to a state (like the nice folks of Wisconsin) they have STOPPED anything from being accomplished in our state government. {isn’t that special?}

SEYMOUR STEAK-N-SHAKE—this is completely personal, but….last night my two girls and four of their friends made special arrangements to stop and eat there on the way to the HS basketball sectional game. For some reason, S-n-S kept them waiting for over 30 minutes. It wasn’t busy (their waitress was texting) and the manager never stepped in to help out. Then when they were served their food, it was flopped all over the plate and messy and the drinks were served half full. The whole fiasco ruined their fun outing and made them late for a game that they were way early to attend. {Poor service means no tip}

BLOOD DRIVE—This too, is a little personal. My youngest was so excited to help out and donate at the school’s blood drive. The sign-up was so big that they extended to another day (Yay, I know this is a positive). Her appointment was for 1:15 (I am in a class & hubby was preaching a funeral) but I wanted to be there just in case she needed some courage. I go down about 1:30 because I know they get behind and she’s behind a long list of guys that were WALK-INS! Whaaaaa? No way! I had to leave her….. πŸ™ {tacky tacky}

I know I’m not supposed to dwell on things I cannot change. I also know that I’m one of those warm-n-fuzzy people who wants the world and it’s people to be good & holy. Not realistic, I know. Still, I wish it were that way. I try to do things the right way and I have taught my kids to as well. Why can’t everyone put their best foot forward? Is that too much to ask?

If you’re shaking your head about the crazy stuff going on around you…know that you’re not alone, friend. Everyday….I’m reminded more that this world IS NOT MY HOME!!

And it’s not yours either. Aren’t you glad?

Banquet Table

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Some days, when I think of the depths of my unworthiness to be a child of God…..I get overwhelmed! I mean, really? Who wouldn’t? I could be anywhere, doing anything and yet God in His mercy saved me. I am so humbled and thankful.

Everytime I read the Parable of the Wedding in Matthew 22, my mind instantly goes to the many people I encounter day in and day out that want nothing to do with Christ. Not only do they miss out on earthly blessings by not accepting their “invitation”, but they ultimately give up their chance of eternity with Him. It makes my stomach hurt knowing people I care about….don’t want to follow Jesus.

I think that’s how it’s supposed to be……me, you & other fellow followers of God should hurt for the lost. It should bother us enough that we do something about it. We should KEEP INVITING them! With urgency.

Am I sharing Christ with urgency each day? The answer is, no. I’m busy, buzzing along with my own agenda. I’m compelled to make some changes in my “witness protection plan”! So, hear my warning….I’m seeking out guests for the banquet. If you’re not already a guest, I’ll be inviting you to join.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Jn. 14:6

She’s My Girl

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Who knew that MY girl was the feature article in last week’s newspaper? Well, lots of people…just not me!

We don’t usually buy the local paper. The teacher I work with (Mrs. Mackey) receives a stack of them at school and every once in a while I’ll bring one home. It’s totally hit or miss!

This happened to be the time….she sent one home with me. Yay! Then hubby walks in with a newspaper too. He just happened to see it at the checkout and picked one up. At dinner, Ally remembered that she was “probably” in this week’s paper! Cool!

Not only was she the featured senior article but she also had her picture in with Touch of Class. So, having two issues was meant to be!

Here’s the link.
