My last day of freedom

August 12th, 2009

Yea, it’s over! My summer break is kaput! Gone! Nada! History!
I’m so very sad! It is hard saying goodbye to the freedom of sleeping in and lounging around in jammies as long as I want. Oh the memories.

I spent it working like a mad dog around my house too. It was piled high with laundry, dishes and just messes everywhere. I even washed my gigantic car (mainly because my windshield was so grody…I couldn’t see out of it!). So when I went to wash my windshield..I realized I haven’t washed the filthy beast in ….I don’t know how long. It was disgusting!

Tonight was our school’s first freshman induction. Our campus has undergone a huge building transformation. All last year, we spent under construction. It was a bit of a hassle. But, the results were a beautiful new wing (just for our freshman). It looks amazing! Gates will only have 3 classes in that wing….the rest are all over the high school building. Which is quite large. Poor kid….she’s gonna need comfy shoes. 🙂

Anyway….I’m going to be doing a new job too. That makes me a little nervous. I will be teaching a Math remediation class (so I’ll have my own room). The curriculum will be computer based and the classes should consist of sophomores that have either made a D or an F in their last year Algebra class.

Have I mentioned here….HOW MUCH I DESPISE MATH? Oh really, I haven’t? Well…..let’s just say……MATH IS THE DEVIL!!! I would rather do just about anything than be responsible for any young mind bettering their math skills. What are my principal’s thinking? God bless them! They sure tried to encourage me.

So, here’s hoping!

It’s going to be fine. I’m just terribly intimidated! Call me weak! I don’t care. But please……..PRAY FOR MEEEEEEEEE!

Happy first day……

Words seem so meaningless

August 10th, 2009

I shared in my waterpark post about the terrible accident on our way home.  My family and I could not shake the scene from our hearts.  While we were several cars back…..the enormous amount of emergency vehicles told us that it was very bad.  It bothered everyone in our car.

The next night I decided to try and find out what had happened.  The location was 2 counties over from where we live in Indiana, so we don’t get any news from that area.  After searching all over the internet…..I finally found an article on it.  A 17 year old girl lost control of her car coming down the hill and hit the guardrail then crossed over and hit another car head-on, killing a 19 year old passenger.  When I read his name…..I told my husband that my friend/co-worker lives in that county.

Today when I went in to the school for a meeting….I was told it was my friend’s young son, Matt.  I wanted to cry.  I can’t stand the thought of what this sweet family is going through.  The article went on to say that 5 more teenagers were involved and that several were transported by helicopter to different hospitals.  The injuries are serious.

Teacher’s are to report for the new school year tomorrow.  For my friend, she most likely had everything together to do just that….until Friday night at 10:07pm.  Her world took a major turn in the other direction.  Instead of coming in to teacher’s meetings….she will sit at a memorial honoring her boy.

How does this make sense?

Like I said in my other post…. I have to keep reminding myself,  “God is in control”!  Somehow I have to see or trust that this was part of His eternal plan.  It just hurts so deep.

Father,

I cannot even come up with words that seem adequate.  Help her.  Hold my dear friend, Ginger and her family as they come to grips with a loss that stings so painfully.  Only you, God can heal these broken hearts.  Surround them with the love and care that they need right now.  Make your glory known to all involved in this very sad situation.

Amen

Who wants to be a pillar….of salt?

August 9th, 2009

It’s human to want to look back and reflect on life. Especially when we are living with regret. It’s like that moth to the flame thing….we are drawn to it, almost longingly. It’s times like these that we must push forward and look to what God has in store for us. His word says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…” Jeremiah 29:11.

What a relief to know…that even when things don’t work out the way we hope…that God is in the midst of it working on our behalf. He wants to give his children the best. I don’t want to be like Lot’s wife. She was warned but for some reason or another just couldn’t help but look back. Why did she do it? Who knows. Why do any of us look back?

Living with regret or disappointment from your past can haunt you if you let it. Paul gives some great advice, “Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 3:13-14. Our focus should be on Him…..and His return….and our future home in heaven. How can we ever do that if we’re looking back?

Be encouraged today….to press on and seek the goal that God has for you. I promise, it’s better than anything you could ever imagine!

Sweetboy,
I’m really proud of you. You have so much to look forward to. Keep your head up and your eyes fixed on Christ. He will lead you where you need to be. Be willing to go….and don’t look back! Nobody wants to be a pillar of salt! Just ask Lot’s wife….oh yea, you can’t…

The Beach Waterpark

August 8th, 2009

Every summer before we head back to school….we like to end our free-time by going to Cincinnati to The Beach Waterpark. It’s a small waterpark near King’s Island that has just enough fun to make you think you’ve gone somewhere fantastic! Growing up in south Florida and spending most of your time either at the beach or on a lake skiing can really spoil ya!

I miss Florida. For those special places and for family that is there. Which for us….is our whole family! We’re the only ones gone.

Yesterday was our big trip to the waterpark. We tried on Wednesday but a monsoon rainstorm washed out most of our Ohio valley area here on Tuesday. By Wednesday…..it was still yucky and hubby was deathly ill. He spent most of his vacation week in bed sick. Isn’t that how it goes? Anywho. We decided to take off and just go (on Friday). When we arrived there….we found our spot…which were the only 4 chairs left in the park and one was broken. It was in the shade (which was nice) but we were craving some SUN! Haven’t had any all summer….and then the water. OH MY GOODNESS….THE WATER!?! Due to the bad rain, they had to refill the entire park. WITH ICE COLD OHIO WATER!

I couldn’t take it. People were trying so hard to have fun….but the shivering and blue skin gave away their freezing state. We still had fun. By 5 o’ clock….it was cloudy, dark and we felt a few raindrops, which was our sign to hit the road. We usually stay late until closing time, but not this time. We split!

We hit IKEA and did some shopping. Hubby hadn’t been and he really wanted to stay there forever. We picked up the bed Ally found on Wednesday and loaded it up like hillbillies. Then took off for dinner. We broke tradition and didn’t eat at Bob Evan’s (I know, Wow)….we found an Uno’s Chicago Grill. YUM! Love their deep dish Chicago style pizza!

We had a great day!

One thing though….on our drive home we made it back into Indiana and came upon an awful accident. We were able to reroute around it, but the time we spent sitting in the traffic was terrible. Ambulance after ambulance came past us. Emergency vehicles kept coming and whizzing by. It was very disturbing! We prayed for those involved. It was a sad way to end our evening. We couldn’t help but feel concerned. I kept reminding myself and the kids, “God is in control”!

This is what she’s doing….

My girls have the wildest imaginations. They get that from me. Dreaming is part of our genetic make-up. Ally has been fantasizing about changing her room around for a while. She really hated the light pink color on her walls that we painted 7 years ago. It was definitely time for a change.

On our big bust trip to The Beach Waterpark yesterday…. (we were rained out) we stumbled upon IKEA. Oh sweet mercy! Can you say…heavenly? It was divine! I hadn’t been lucky enough to visit one yet. But I’ve heard, friends….I’ve heard all about the fantastic-ness of IKEA! I must say, it was fabulous! I could’ve spent quite a bit more time there. Which brings me back to Ally. She loved that place and found just the bed she’s been dreaming of…..for $89!

Isn’t it pretty? The bed, not the bedding!

She picked out new paint on Monday when we were out shopping for college stuff for Gavin. Her room is ripped apart for the paint work (which is now almost finished). She and Tyler have been busy painting. They ran out after painting two walls. Back to the hardware store only to find out they were out of the base needed to make her paint. So they headed to Lowe’s and they were able to match it. So it’s back to the grindstone here. Still have plenty to work on.

I’m proud of her for taking the initiative to redo her room all on her own. Hopefully she gets her vintage shabby chic bedroom very soon. Change is good.

I keep telling myself that these days…

Been shoppin….

August 4th, 2009

We started late….in the day that is. But that’s just how we roll. Mornings are sacred to my night-time lovin family. We treasure a little morning snooze and breakfast after 10ish 11ish. The day wasn’t wasted though. The stops we had to make were all fairly easy ones…..TJ Maxx, Target, Dollar Tree, Sam’s, Big Lots….then to the shoe store, Hibbett’s.

Just about every store we hit….we scored! It was as if heaven parted the way for us to find very important items at or below our budgeted price. Sweet, huh? The only big thing we didn’t get today was his mini fridge. That is still up for debate. We found a good one for less than $100 ($94) at Target. But, it doesn’t have a real freezer section in it. The one we really like is on sale for $158 at both Target and Menards. It’s equipped with both fridge and freezer seperate. For what he’ll be needing….the freezer section is pretty important. Ice is special to us! As much as pizza rolls and burrito’s! 🙂 Yea, we know how to live high!

TJ Maxx had the bed in a bag deal! Perfect…and the sheets feel pretty nice too. He really likes it. The colors are navy, red and white. Manly! Oh and a set of towels too. Nice and fluffy, the way towels should be! We picked up the command strips and hooks for his walls at Big Lots. We grabbed an under the bed storage box, a $10 floor lamp from Target and he had to have a plug-in kettle (for the GRITS he must eat)…all super cheap.

We’re getting there. Little by little. Rome wasn’t built in a day, ya know? Oh I almost forgot to tell his favorite find today…..his backpack! We found a really nice one at Sam’s ($39.95) but it was really plain looking….no color choices. So he waited. We stopped to look at shoes in Hibbett’s (didn’t find any) but noticed backpack’s were on 20%off. He tried a few on, most felt flimsy and cheap. As we were about to walk out, he spotted a rack of Ogio’s. (I had told him earlier that I was trying to win him an Ogio on a blog contest…cause they are SUPER NICE).

The cool thing? I had a $10 off coupon for anything over $20. Plus, they were on sale. Yay! He picked the coolest one too (brown plaid). Go see for yourself. He will be thankful for it when he starts dragging around that laptop!

Moving forward. Everyday!
