Since You Been Gone

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Thank you Kelly Clarkson. I know you didn’t have {my husband} in mind when you belted out that tune on the airwaves. But since this is my blog and the stuff I’m whining about is my life the chorus of your song just seems to fit!

Since HE’S been gone….crazy stuff has been happening. Where do I begin? Let’s start at the beginning.

FRIDAYWe’ll call it FLAT TIRE FRIDAY! I discovered the expensive and complicated little problem as I was pulling out of my driveway. The car felt funny as I backed out of the garage and by the time I made it up the hill of our street….I knew what that weird feeling was. πŸ™

I turned around and headed back home…knowing that would be the end of driving my car for the next 10+ days. Can you change a tire on a Suburban? Yea, me neither! So parked, it is! My alternative? Gavin’s car. I know how to drive a manual but I CHOOSE not to, normally. Now that I’m “broke down” so to say, vroom vroom I go. Err, do you know how hard it is to find REVERSE? Geez!

Good times.

SATURDAYEveryone had somewhere to be. Gates was visiting Xavier with friends and Ally had to work. Since Ally’s schedule was a short one, I thought it’d be a good time to ride along and get some shopping done. FACT: Mama needed hair color from Sally’s!

While shopping in Target, I go over to the shoe department. I noticed a lady and her son on the boots aisle, so I wandered around killing time while she did her thing there (that’s where I wanted to browse). It was clear the little boy wasn’t having the best time (insert: Mom is ignoring him) as he was rolling around on the floor and the shoe bench while she pulled boxes off the shelves and chatted away on her cell. Again, I scooted around on the other lanes…waiting. Finally, I pulled up behind her and see her son is on the opposite end of the shoe area ALONE. She, of course is still on her phone and completely blocking the whole aisle. So, I just wait behind her (since I can’t get past her) until she packs up to move. By this time, girlfriend has tried on everything and has wrecked the whole place. She turns around and says to me, “Oh, I’m on the phone!” to which I reply, “It’s okay, I’m just shopping.” What happens next? SHE STILL JUST STANDS THERE….TALKING on her cellphone ABOUT STUPID PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP STUFF! I nearly laughed outloud.

Really? People act so crazy sometimes! Me, included as you’ll see next.

After I pick Ally up, we decide to go to dinner at Texas Roadhouse. Hello, it’s Friday night packed! So we slither around through the crowded room waiting for #239 to pop up on the screen. Finally, Ally notices a spot to sit on one of the benches. We wiggle on over and A asks this “young adult” girl who is busy texting on her iphone 4 if she was holding the seats. She says, “Just these” as she waves her hand NEVER LOOKING UP AT US in the general area of the bench. So A sits down and there is still room but I wait to sit since I wasn’t clear if she meant all of the space.

I stand there (remember, I’ve been on a slight fibro flare-up which means I have limited energy) and wait. I waited like 5 minutes and no one else shows up. So, I sat down (with the intentions of getting up if someone arrived to join her) and not 1 minute later three people got up right next to her on the other side leaving almost a whole bench. She scooted over and a few minutes later her man walked up with a beer in his hand and sat down. She blurted out for everyone to hear, “I TRIED TO HOLD YOU A SEAT BUT “THOSE” PEOPLE STOLE IT!!!”. I tried to keep my lips sealed (eyebrows up)….but it stabbed too deep. I looked at the guy and said, “I’m sorry, it was me…I’m not feeling well!”. She wouldn’t let it go (he was embarrassedly silent)! By this time the people around me are TICKED to the max and are speaking up. She was furious! Another family sitting beside her spoke up and called her on her behavior. She lost it then (spit out some expletives) grabbed her man’s beer, set it on a shelf and stormed out! Honestly, it was unreal! I was shaking it flipped me out so much. To put it mildly, my stress level skyrocketed.

Later, after we finally made it home from our 2+hour dinner out… someone decided to go 4-wheeling all over my yard. Literally, all over my back and front yard. It was after 11:00pm and I’M HOME ALONE with my two girls! Whoever it was seemed to arrive by way of the woods behind my house. The problem? They drove around and around my house (which is hilly terrain) for what seemed like a good 15 minutes. Did I mention it was really late and we were home alone? I opened my front door just as they jumped my curb and landed in my driveway. I could only see that it was an all-terrain vehicle (maybe a Gator or a Polaris) and it peels off! Up the street it zings as if it’s running from a crime. Then I decide—call the police and report it or drop it and get murdered by WHOMEVER they were later.

Yes, I dialed 911!

Not kidding. This has been my crazy life for the last 3 days and I have 8 more to go! Will we make it? πŸ˜‰ Seriously, who can explain why all the excitement happens when the daddy is away? Honey, pray for us. We miss you! We need you too! Happy belated birthday!!

Goodbye Team Washington

Friday, October 21st, 2011

It’s 11:45am. My guys just pulled out of the driveway with grandparents loaded to the hilt for the trip of a Clampett lifetime. It’s been a hectic morning trying to get them out the door. Just goes to show you… You can never prepare enough and trips are hard work. Prayers for them all.

For me (here left behind) it looks like fall break came just in time. I’ve gotten a little too tired and now have a fibromyalgia flare-up to contend with. Boo! My throat is sore, my arms and legs feel as if they’re full of lead and I’m exhausted! So, I’ll be resting while I hold down the fort.

Don’t worry about me though….I’m thinking of making these—–>

Seriously? Homemade TWIX BARS? Somebody, S T O P M E !!!

Darn! I don’t know why this link isn’t working. I’ll let you know how it goes as soon as I can hit the store for sugar & such. πŸ™‚

Happy fall weekend, friends.

Thursday Friday

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Yea, for me! It’s fall here in Indiana which means time for a little break! I love living in a place that acknowledges the importance of enjoying the gorgeous leaves and chilly weather by taking a few days OFF!

Woohoo, baby!

So, I say all that to let you know (not that this is lifechanging information for you) that I’m all hopped up on YEEHAW vibes because today is my Friday at work! Yay, yippee….wahoo!

The only down side (if there can be one) to my fall break happy is that my hubby and son are departing tomorrow for the long journey across the US of A. My in-laws are moving and never coming back (just kidding) to Washington state, taking with them…everything they have left to their name. Which isn’t a whole lot. They have two vehicles and a camper full of belongings–imagine how freeing that would feel?

The trip begins on Friday and from what I can tell….they are trying to map it out to drive around 10 hours each day. My son will drive one vehicle and hubby the other. Each of them have their own idea of how this little adventure will play out.

Have you ever taken grandparents on a loooooong trip? If so, maybe you know a little about all this entails. They are excited, nervous and hopeful that they will arrive in time to catch their flight back to Indiana. Fingers crossed!

The girls and I are staying behind of course because we have jobs & school that frown upon 10 day vacay’s in the middle of life. πŸ™

Washington is far, far away. I’m going to miss them! I know they’ll be in good hands with my brother & sis-in-law. I can’t wait to hear all about the new lives they are creating in such a beautiful place.

Who knows….maybe someday, I’ll get to travel there myself to visit!

Vernon Ghost Walk

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Every year, my girls have participated in the local small town (Vernon) Ghost Walk. Thanks to a very cool drama teacher (Mrs. Jarboe) both girls have acted in some pretty weird shows and they love it!

Since I only have one baby in High School….this year was a little bit sad. I love seeing my kids do their creative genius. Now that Ally is “all grown up” it’s Gates job to entertain the family. Oh the pressure! πŸ˜‰

She’s got it covered!

The cool thing about this night (actually it’s 2 nights every October) is that you get to tour several “spooky” stories. If you can imagine sitting around a campfire telling ghost stories, this is almost like that. The tour begins at the town’s historical society building. In this building, every little piece of history from the town of Vernon is lovingly stored. Volunteers decorate with a Halloween theme and pull out any old “stories/tales” that have been passed around to share scare the visitors.

Here is hubby & our boy before the “fortune teller” told them some cocka-mamie prediction. We’re still laughing about her — Whaaaaa?

See the looks on their faces? Yea, that’s kind of how we feel about dabbling in fortune telling. WE ARE NOT DABBLERS!! And she was an ACTOR!

Once you finish at the historical building, tour guides walk you around the dark old town to “stations” with actors re-enacting an old story/tale. It’s really a fun way to enjoy the fall air and see the high school drama kids show off their talent. For $3.00!

Gates and her friends were the last show on the tour. By the time you get to the end….you’re shivering and ready to run back to the historical building for the hot chocolate/apple cider and snacks. Which are yummy–of course!

Gates is playing the mother of three lovely girls (Oh, how befitting) and one of them is a werewolf! But they don’t know it….yet!

Looks like mama is figuring out her life is in danger. Run, Gates run!

Here’s the star posing with some audience members (aka- College sis & Bestie home from Xavier). Not being partial, but I think they saved the best for last. Gates and her classmates rocked it! They did a great job portraying a twisted up family. hehe!

NOTE: The event is all about raising money to support the Vernon Historical Society Building. It’s done in fun. Not to push an evil agenda. Halloween doesn’t have to be all about wicked stuff. {My opinion}

Broke Down

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

It was supposed to be a cleaning day (my in-laws are on their way to visit). Instead, I spent it rescuing two of my beloved children from the side of the road.

It was the right place to be.

When I arrived home from school yesterday, my two oldest had a “car deal” going with a college student in Vincennes (IN). I had that feeling. You know the one. It’s the “DON’T DO IT!” feeling.

I let them chatter it out and weigh the pro’s & con’s. Then, they left. For the deal to go down, they had to drive half-way to meet with the seller/trader. The seller had an SUV to trade for my son’s old car plus $500 cash.

Sounds reasonable, right? (My son’s car is for sale for $1500.00)

The only problem? My son’s car HAS NOT been behaving at all. So the trip was risky!

Hubby sent them on their way (while I tried to focus on the serious house cleaning I had to do) and I prayed for their safety and car goodness. It was only 45 minutes when they called for H E L P !!

I hopped in with hubby (because I’m their mom & I was imagining all sorts of side-of-the-road scaries) and off we went in the dark to search for our babies in a strange little town.

We made it there before 8pm and it was almost as I had imagined. My son buried under the hood trying frantically to repair his old love while my sweet girl held her cellphone/flashlight for him to see. All the while, shivering and praying that it would miraculously be healed.

The evening didn’t get any better by our presence. Hubby worked under, over and inside the hood of that pile of junk car. {God, thank you for such a patient and loving man!} During all this fun…the buyer/trader was calling and HE WASN’T VERY HAPPY that we seemed to be “backing out of the deal”.

Dude, really?

Long story short. Hubby would not be able to get the car to a point of “dealing” and made the choice to try to get it back home. Once we got it going again, it took us nearly an hour to make it to the next town (still not our town) and we ditched it in a grocery store parking lot.

With a note. BROKE DOWN! Coming back to get it tomorrow! πŸ™

Lord,
I’m so thankful for your protective hand on my children. The car situation was frustrating but your care for them was a blessing. Help us to sell the car and to purchase one that’s healthy and safe.
Amen

Saying– I Do

Monday, October 17th, 2011

I saw this video over on Pensieve this morning and had to share it. It’s so sweet! I don’t know these two people…but I loved peeking into their special day! I can’t help but tear up when he sees her walking down the aisle. You might too!

I’ve been praying for years that God would bless my children with loving Christian spouses. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve even gotten pretty detailed with my list of wishes. I don’t believe it’s selfish, because God is interested in our dreams! And He does know JUST WHAT WE NEED!

So, I’m trusting Him.

What about you? Do you pray for the ones your children will marry? For the relationships they will choose. What about the parents and lifestyle they are being raised in (right now)? Have you told God your dreams? It’s a gift for us to love our kids enough to smear them with God’s grace through our prayers.

Someday……we will hand them over to someone special in marriage. Why not share in that blessing?

Oh and click over and read Robin’s post on The Ultimate Security Blanket too. She’s been writing a 31 Days of Parenting Teens & Tweens series and I LOVE IT!!
