Hanging in There

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

I’m trying to keep my head above the water. It’s the day before the LAST day of school so the energy is alive amongst the savages. Therefore, the challenge is to keep them under some sort of control.

Tough job!

I woke up this morning to a dryer full of clothes covered in black gel ink pen. Good morning Mama! Not only do the clothes have ink spots but the dryer may never look the same again. Poor me oh my!

I won’t go down without a fight!

Oklahoma is so terribly heartbreaking and I can’t get the images out of my mind. Just now I watched a news video of an elderly lady standing beside her completely lost home…then during the interview & out from under the crushed rubble her sweet dog comes crawling out. They had to help him of course because he was totally buried!! All night!

God help them all! People & pets alike!

For this to be my Tuesday/Thursday it sure is a doozy! I decided after the ink pen disaster that I WOULDN’T give satan a moment of my joy today and I mean it!

I will sing of HIS goodness & glory!

Love What You Wear

Friday, May 17th, 2013

I could not be more flattered than when someone compliments me on an outfit.  Seriously, at my age?  I'm thrilled to hear friends & even strangers say they love what I'm wearing!  Yesterday, I wore a simple lacy dress that cost me a whopping $29 dollars(maybe) and I bet you that I had more than 25 compliments.  Everywhere I went…someone said, "I love your dress!".  By the end of the day, I was thinking to myself, "Wow, this is a great dress!".

The truth about the clothes I wear is simple — > ON SALE!

I have always been pretty fashion conscious.  I never want to look dorky (even though I HAVE) or out of style.  However, I'm not one to follow trends necessarily either.  I really just BUY WHAT I LOVE!  If I see something that is a must-have and looks flattering on me…I try my best to find it on sale or at a better price.  Usually, I do.  If not, it wasn't that important anyway.

My daughters do the same thing when shopping.  They first look over what's popular and cute then cut to the clearance rack for the real bargains.  I can't stress enough how important it is to shop in the right places.  TJ Maxx, Dillards, Francescas….Forever 21 (carefully, want to be age appropriate) and Banana Republic.  These are some of my favorite places to find real bargains and simple styles that fit my personality.  I confess, I love 2nd hand stores too.  There IS NOTHING wrong with buying refurbed clothes & stuff.  Matter of fact, it is the greatest way to get the things you LOVE but can't really afford paying the full price/retail!

In all honesty, I'm not doing anything special.  Everyone I know is looking for a bargain and most everyone I know wants to look good.

Here are a few of my shopping rules — just the basics, y'all!

1)  Only buy what I need & love.  Ever.

2)  Shop at frugal stores that offer great sales & clearance.

3)  Scour the clearance & sale racks thoroughly.

4)  Pick unique items.  Dresses are a great way to look good, easily.

5)  WEAR WHAT I LOVE!  Too many times, we save lovely things for "special" occasions.  Don't do that!  Wear it!

6)  Shop often.  Don't buy often, but look for what's out there and be price smart.

7)  Buy items that can go with stuff I already have.  Layering and mix-n-match is the way to go.

8)  Take back what doesn't work.  If I get home and it shows a flaw that I despise or feels itchy….I return it!

9)  Find what flatters the most.  Don't chase trends.  Wear what makes you look fabulous.  I don't look right in turtlenecks or certain collared shirts.  So, I avoid them!

10)  Stick to certain colors.  I can't get enough white, cream or taupe.  I love them and they love me back.  Every single time I wear those colors, I receive compliments.  Figure out what makes you shine!

I love clothes but I love good bargains even better.  I'm a firm believer that everyone can look good and afford it.  Some people pride themselves on wearing the most expensive or popular clothing, and throwing around fancy names.  I'm not into that so much.  If I can find good looking & affordable, so can you!  Get out there…and shop, friends!

Showing Honor

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

It's the end of the school year and with that comes a slew of recognitions.  Students, of course, for all their hard work and accomplishments.  Great teachers who have influenced and worked alongside them everyday and even those who are retiring from a lifetime of service.  All of them, very deserving and worth honoring.  I see the hardwork and I understand the comittment it takes to do such a job as education.  I thank God for the many teachers who invested in my own children throughout school.

Teachers are amazing!

I read a Facebook status today from a co-worker that pointed out how important it is to recognize the many who make school great behind the scenes.  She wasn't complaining or pointing fingers.  Her words were kind and her tone loving.  But her message powerful!  There are many little people who do jobs around schools that never get noticed.  I know this….very well.

I'm not jumping on a soapbox and I'm not taking her post to the extreme.  I simply agree.  I see the dedication it takes to make the education environment run smoothly.  I know aides who go the extra mile (even though they make peanuts compared to the teachers), I recognize how important janitors are (gosh, how I love it when they make the A/C work or clean up an accident), I enjoy seeing the smiles of a happy secretary (who is helpful too) and I get a kick out of the little ways the lunchroom ladies hide my favorite cookie for me or others (just because they KNOW what we like).  These people are important!  They are the glue that holds the place together and they never get a big shout out.

So, in honor of school coming to a close….

GOD BLESS THOSE WHO SERVE IN EDUCATION!  The crossing guards, janitors, caretaker aides, nurses, office staff, classroom aides, special ed assistants, lunchroom ladies, maintenance guys & gals, and the SUBSTITUTES!

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE and everyone notices what you do EVERYDAY to make school great!

I hope your summer is as amazing as you!

Home Alone & the Dogs Are Barking

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

What are you afraid of?  I'm home alone tonight. So I can ask such a question.  I made it home a little earlier than usual from my ladies Bible Study.  Strangely, no one else was home.  That never happens at my house.  Someone is always home, day or night.  As soon as I came in from taking my dogs out for a little break…..they started barking.

The scary barking!

The kind of barking that says, stranger danger…killers, everywhere barking!  I tried my best to distract them.  I also played the "I'm not going to think bad thoughts" game with myself while trying to stop the loud growly barks.  No good!  I let my mind wander with WHAT IF thoughts.

Fear can make us crazy!

I don't normally walk around all scaredy-cat like.  I'd like to think of myself as a brave girl.  One who stares down dark lonely nights and alarmed pets with stoic bravery.  But the truth is I get scared.  I feel fear and I think the worst.  Even knowing what I know about God……

I'll never understand why fear grips us and squeezes so tight.  Maybe it's a weakness inside or a lack of faith.  Either way, I'm determined to beat it.  I'm mostly talking about the big fears here: losing a loved one, terrible disease, job loss, home loss.  The barking dogs will stop but a tragedy….can be life-changing.  However…

I love knowing I can turn to scripture when I'm scared.  Here's 3 of my favorites.

Psalm 56:3 "When I am afraid, I will trust in You."

2 Timothy 1:7  "For GOD has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and sound mind."

Joshua 1:9  "This is my command–be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged.  For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

God,

There are moments when I take my eyes off of you.  I'm sorry.  When that happens, the door opens for all sorts of confusion.  Help me to focus on you and the many ways you are covering me with your care.

Amen

Say It – No Don’t

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

I have a way with words.  Sometimes my words are nice and other times not so much.  Like today.  My friend asked me a very simple question about a meeting and instead of just saying, "I can't go or I'm not going to be able to make it!".  I managed to open up my mouth and reveal a bitter spot in my heart.  She didn't deserve to hear why I wasn't going to the meeting but because I wasn't thinking with a pure heart, I told her anyway.

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord"  Isaiah 55:8

Since coming home and pondering my conversation….I've thought about how foolish I must have looked to her.  It didn't really matter whether I attended the dumb meeting or not but how I shared my reasons why did matter.  I hate that I sounded so jerky.  I hate that I even bothered to voice a negative opinion because I missed a chance to let God bless me.  See, God doesn't need us to fight & fume over any slight we might feel from others.  He is big enough to handle that and more.  My taking the opportunity to whine about why I wasn't attending ruined any moral high road I was hoping to travel.

I'm just being honest.

I wish I could erase that whole conversation.  It wasn't an ugly confrontation or anything like that.  I just know…..it didn't honor God and it made me look pathetic.

Lord

I'm sorry for the condition of my heart.  It's not always up to par.  I'm mad at myself for spewing stupid words to my friend who loves me & You.  Thank you that she's the kind of friend who overlooks mistakes.

Amen

One More Monday

Monday, May 13th, 2013

It's down to single digits. School ends in 7 more days. One more Monday! Oh Monday! What a jolt of reality you are to the working folks.

My excuse for not having a clean house, dinner ready or energy to party is fast coming to an end. I'll have to come up with some new excuses as to why I'm not on top of my mom game.

Over the weekend my son brought over a big surprise for (me) the family. Disguised as a Mother's Day present — this is the new computer for all to enjoy.

It's a 23 inch HP touchscreen all-in-one computer. Blogging will be a whole new experience after all the years of using a Netbook. My eyes will not know what hit em! Big screen! Wow.

Plans of family coming took a big turn on Saturday. My hubby's parents have been traveling by car from Washington state to visit for graduation. Somewhere in Iowa my mother-in-law fell and suffered some rather serious injuries. After an ambulance ride to the ER and scans of injured body parts the surgeon revealed she would need surgery. Thankfully they had the rationalization to know they had to go back home for such a big event. So, turning around with her injuries & pain they went.

Sad for them…sad for us too. But our prayers are for good care & quick healing ahead. What an awful way to end what was supposed to be a leisurely fun trip. So sorry for them.

Look how far hubby has gotten on the stairs. Rain, cold weather, work and busyness be darned! He's going to finish!  Maybe he'll beat me getting out of school.  Ya think?  Don't worry, if he does….there are plenty of other house tasks to jump into next!

Happy Monday, y'all!
